NEM Grid Pulse

How regional prices, demand and renewable supply are moving, and what a flat data-centre load would do to peak stress.

Status compares the latest complete month with the prior twelve complete months. Price, peak and volatility: amber above 10% (peak 5%) and red above 30% (peak 15%). Negative-price hours: amber from 2% of intervals, red from 8%. Renewable share: green at 45% or more, amber from 30%. A flat +1 GW is amber at 25% of a region's own peak and red at 50%.

Monthly price

Volume-weighted regional spot price. NEM is demand-weighted across the five regions. A starred month is still incomplete.

Hour of day

The duck curve in NEM time, which does not follow daylight saving. Demand is operational demand, already net of rooftop solar.

Demand

Price

Negative-price hours

Hours when the 5-minute spot price was below zero. The NEM line uses the demand-weighted price.

Volatility

Sample standard deviation of the 5-minute regional reference price, in AUD per MWh.

Renewable share

Wind, solar, hydro and bioenergy divided by local generation. Imports are excluded, so this is not the share of electrons consumed. Rooftop solar is in the numerator and is not subtracted from operational demand again.
